Rail Yard Studios timbers are air-dried and that is fairly unique these days.
Most lumber today is kiln-dried. Kiln-drying is a method used to speed up the drying process. And as any craftsman will tell you, rushing things along rarely gets the best out of anything.
Air-dried lumber like we use have much more color and a better definition of the grain. Kiln drying causes wood to lose as much as 20% of its color. Even if it’s not “steamed”, the high temperatures kill some of the more subtle features and colors in the grain.
The result is a far more colorful and detailed graining that we think sets our timbers apart from all of the others.
