Elevated Bench No. 41 with Illinois Rail
Our Elevated Bench is a guaranteed conversation starter whether you use it as a seat, a coffee table or simply an accent piece. It represents an incredibly versatile example of the historic preservation curated through the furniture we design and craft.
The Elevated Bench pays homage to the history of the L – the iconic urban rail line that runs above the streets of downtown Chicago. The L, as it is known to Chicagoans, runs among skyscrapers and downtown residences just as this bench finds itself equally comfortable in a home or an office. Solidly built atop a steel frame, just as its namesake, the Elevated Bench is built to be a persevering part of the landscape for generations to come.
Embracing the design concept to “Keep It Simple,” this seating design uses a wood timber sandwiched between two steel rails. Each rail proudly displays the information about its origins dating back over 100 years.
The foundry name, the month and year of manufacture and even the weight of the rail per yard appear on the web of the rail on both sides of the bench.
The word Maryland on the web of the rail in this bench connects it to its origins at the Sparrows Point Foundry in Baltimore, Maryland. Formerly a 4-mile long industrial steel manufacturing plant, the area is now home to one of the largest intermodal business parks in the U.S., including ships, trucks and of course, rail transportation services.
The Maryland Sparrows Point Foundry now serves as the home to many large companies including FedEx, Gap, Amazon and more.
