Description
Where rail meets road, something happens. A moment of decision. A pause. Then movement.
The Crossing Coffee Table captures that tension in steel—its bold X-shaped silhouette echoing the crossbuck that has marked America’s grade crossings for generations. It’s a familiar form, reimagined with purpose.
This particular piece carries a different kind of signature. The rail is branded from the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company, one of the South’s great industrial engines and an early cornerstone of what would become U.S. Steel. Stamped into its surface is “OPEN HEARTH,” a mark of the steelmaking process that defined an era—along with a single tic and the number “09,” indicating it was rolled in January of 1909.
January 1909—when steam still ruled the rails, when expansion wasn’t a plan but a fact, and when steel like this was being laid down to connect towns that barely existed yet. This rail didn’t just witness that growth—it made it possible.
We paired this one with a round top crafted from reclaimed boxcar flooring for a distinctive look and feel. And while we may repurpose things, know that the original foundry markings on the rails remain visible, exactly as they were struck over a century ago. Not restored. Not reinterpreted. Simply revealed.
This isn’t just a table. It’s a fixed point in time—waiting for someone who understands the weight of it.
