The Mountain Pass Bench No. 30

With this bench, we pay homage to the high desert western states - places like the Rocky Mountains where trains pass through cuts and tunnels to get past the high summits and steep grades. Crafted from solid hardwood timbers, the Mountain Pass Bench features two sections of rail as armrests and a notched cutout for the seating area. The smooth sanded interior of the wood timber provides a gorgeous contrast to the rough exterior traditionally found on a crosstie.

Of course, we use only 100% creosote-free timbers. Our crossties are culls or seconds from the tie plant. They are never treated and come to us as virgin, if slightly imperfect woodstock.

Mountains and steep hills present a unique challenge for railroad. That's because steel wheels on steel rails don't offer a lot of friction. When you are trying to move a heavily laden train, a grade over so much as 1 percent can be challenging. The physics are interesting to say the least. Sometimes you have to cross a grade in excess of 1 percent, but it requires a longer train to accomplish that, and you have to make sure the load is distributed accordingly, but that's a much longer tale to tell.

By traversing the cut in the mountain, it's possible to ease the challenge. We're all about making it easier, so sit down and relax on this bench and enjoy the small advantage it has to offer.
