Reclaimed Boxcar Flooring: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Reclaimed Boxcar Flooring: Two Sides of the Same Coin

How authentic railroad wood offers two distinct finishes for custom furniture

The Rugged History of Reclaimed Boxcar Flooring

Our reclaimed boxcar flooring comes from railroad freight cars that hauled extraordinary volumes of goods across North America. Every board carries a piece of that history, and the topside tells the story of a hard-working life on the rails.

Deep scars, gouges, machinery marks, and the occasional burn mark are all part of the character.

At Rail Yard Studios, we plane away the roughest spots, taming the wild beast that years of service have left behind. But we don't want to tame it too much.

We love the character. We love the stories these thick, butcher-block-style sections of red and white oak tell about moving freight and helping build the backbone of America.

The Other Side of Reclaimed Railroad Wood

But there's another side. One we rarely use.

Facing downward beneath the freight, the underside of each board traveled those same miles, riding above railroad tracks supported by crossties and surrounded by granite and limestone ballast.

While the topside endured years of heavy cargo and machinery, the underside escaped much of that punishment.

The result? A surface with installation marks and minor imperfections, but a considerably more refined appearance than its hard-working counterpart.

Same authentic railroad history. Two very different personalities.

Distressed or Refined: Custom Railroad Furniture Options

We love the character and history written into the service side of reclaimed boxcar flooring. But we understand that some spaces call for something a bit more... ahem... refined.

That's why, on select tables and custom furniture pieces, we can offer a choice:

Distressed: The rugged, heavily textured surface that tells the story of decades of railroad service.

Refined: The smoother underside, with subtle imperfections and a more understated appearance.

Both are authentic reclaimed railroad wood. Both carry the same history. The difference is simply which side of that history you want to see.

Authentic Railroad History, Your Choice

Not every piece of Rail Yard Studios furniture offers this option. Sometimes the design calls for one side over the other.

But when we have the choice, we'll leave it to our clients to decide.

After all, there's no wrong way to celebrate railroad history.

So, which side would you choose?

Heads or tails?
